Founded in 1956, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi is a medical college and a public university of medical research. They are the first Indian center to perform heart transplantation successfully and are leaders in stem cell therapy.
In total there are 11 AIIMS institutes established, with another 12 in development. They have been declared Institutes of National Importance by a law of Parliament.
AIIMS in New Delhi has 49 departments, 8 specialized centers and 18 central facilities. There are 5 main campuses distributed in 5 locations.
AIIMS admission takes place through the AIIMS exam held by the AIIMS in New Delhi every year for UG courses. The AIIMS PG courses take place every six months. There are around 42 PG specialty courses. The AIIMS takes no account of NEET results for the allocation of places.
AIIMS offers an MBBS course at bachelor level and a master level specialization in various fields such as – surgery, medicine, and other fields. There are at least 45 super-specializations in AIIMS at the master level. There are also research courses at the doctoral level in AIIMS.
The PostGraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), located in Chandigarh, India, and founded in 1962, is a medical and research institute of national importance that provides students with medical, educational, research and training facilities.
PGIMER do not offer MBBS qualifications, i.e., they do not offer UG level diplomas (MBBS, BDS), but provide admissions to PG courses and post-doctoral courses two times a year.
A satellite operating center is located in Sangrur, Punjab. PGIMER also accepts foreign medical students from other countries to receive elective training programs in one of its departments.
All Indian level examinations are conducted by the institute on the basis of merit. The exam is one of the most competitive exams held throughout India. In addition to medicine, the institute also provides nursing as well as paramedical training.
Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC Vellore) was founded in 1900 and it is considered one of the oldest institutions in India. Kasturba Medical College (KMC), founded in 1953 in Manipal, Karnataka, India, became the first self-financed medical university in India. The KMC’s medical degree (MBBS) is recognized all over the world, which includes the General Medical Council, the ECFMG, the Australian Medical Council, and the Medical Council of Malaysia, among others.
UG, PG, Certificate, and Super Specialty courses are offered by KMC. There are 36 departments, as well as an anatomy museum, cardiology labs, and a simulation laboratory.

Since 1823, the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has been one of the oldest institutions under direct administrative control of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. JIPMER is an institution of national importance.
JIPMER has two campuses – JIPMER Puducherry and JIPMER Karaikal and the total number of places offered for admission are 200 (for UG course) and 200 (for PG course).
The admission to the courses is done on an entirely Indian basis using the JIPMER exam which takes place annually for the UG course as well as two times a year for the PG course. NEET score for admission is not taken into consideration and the school assigns its own degrees.
Furthermore, the institute also provides super-specialty and Ph.D. courses as well as nursing courses, B.Sc., etc. JIPMER belongs to TEIN (Trans-Eurasia Information Network), which allows the hospital to interact with European and Asian countries and share knowledge.

It provides programs for super-specialties related to Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Sciences through its three-year post-doctoral courses in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and Master in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery. All students are trained in post-doctoral certification courses, various short-term training programs and observation programs to train teachers and students from other institutions.
Admission of all medical programs is done through NEET (SS) scores.
The King George Medical University (KGMU), founded in 1905, used to be known as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. It was established after the transformation of King George’s Medical College (founded in 1911) by a law of the Uttar Pradesh government.
